An unidentified gunman killed two people and wounded at least three others on a bustling thoroughfare in central Tel Aviv on Friday before fleeing, Israeli authorities said.
Nashad Milkham, 29, was named as the shooter in media reports after he was allegedly identified by his father, an Israeli police volunteer who watched CCTV footage of the shooting, the Mail reported.
When asked about reports that the Dizengoff bar is popular with LGBT crowds, Huldai said the pub “doesn’t have any unique significance for me”.
As seen in video footage from the scene, he calmly opens his bag, pulls out his Karl Gustav sub machine gun, then steps out into the street and starts firing toward the pub and pedestrians passing by.
Spokeswoman Luba Samri said five people were wounded, two of whom died in hospital.
Two people were killed and two others remained in serious condition.
Tel Aviv Police Commander Yehuda Dahan told reporters certainty is required.
On Friday night, two rockets fired from Gaza landed in southern Israel – no injuries or damage were reported.
“You have to understand the central area of Tel Aviv is a main populated area with hundreds of tourists that have come in for the new year, and we have to prevent any further incident from taking place”, he said.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said: “From what we know until now and as part of the on-going investigation there’s a strong possibility that it was in fact a terrorist attack”.
The attack happened as the bodies of 23 Palestinians killed during several recent attacks on Israelis were being returned to West Bank neighborhoods in an apparent bid to ease tensions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the scene of the attack Saturday evening.
