The Israeli attacks came in response to the firing of a rocket by militants which landed in a residential area of Sderot, the closest Israeli town to the Gaza border.

“We conducted strikes against several dozen targets in the Gaza Strip”, an army spokeswoman told the AFP news agency on Monday.
The incident occured around 1:45 a.m. local time (3:45 GMT) as 12 people gathered infront of the Israeli consulate to protest against Israeli airstikes in Gaza which were carried out overnight Sunday in response to rocket fire into Israel.
A Palestinian health ministry spokesperson said that a 17-year-old Palestinian youth suffered a minor shrapnel injury in his foot while militants belonging to smaller Islamic jihadist groups were lightly hurt.
“Normalizing ties with Israel does not mean that we will keep silent in the face of attacks against the Palestinian people”, it added, referring to ties recently restored after a break of six years.
“On the contrary, we will continue to (defend) the Palestinian cause”, it said, calling Israel’s actions “against worldwide laws and especially against consciences”.
Israeli warplanes launched a series of airstrikes over the Palestinian city of Gaza on Sunday night, as retaliation after a rocket was sacked from within Gaza into the southern Israeli city of Sderot. Furthermore, the report said Israeli artillery shells landed in the Filistin training ground which Hamas fighters use for military training.
Relations between the two countries crumbled after Israeli marines stormed a Turkish ship in May 2010 to enforce a naval blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, killing ten Turks on board.
No group had yet claimed responsibility for the rocket attack.
