The Syrian military says its forces have shot down two Israeli aircraft – a warplane and a drone – near the Israeli-controlled part of the Golan Heights. It comes after the Israeli military targeted Syrian positions in the Golan Heights.

The Israeli military was not immediately able to comment.

The strike came hours after a nationwide ceasefire in Syria brokered by the United States and Russian Federation went into effect on Monday evening, the second attempt this year by Washington and Moscow to halt the five-year-old civil war. It said earlier that Israeli aircraft struck Syrian army positions early this morning after stray fire from its war-torn neighbour hit the Israeli-held zone of the Golan Heights the previous day, Russia Today reported.

Israeli journalist and Time of Israel Middle East analyst Avi Issacharoff quoted unnamed Israeli army sources as having denied the Syrian government’s claims.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six Day War of 1967, before Syrian forces briefly re-took the city in 1973 and it was nearly completely destroyed in the subsequent Israeli victory and withdrawal.
