A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told Xinhua that soldiers shot at the 19-year-old, identified by Palestinian media outlets as Mahmoud al-Jawabreh, as he was about to throw a firebomb at the forces in clashes on Route 60 in the West Bank.

Later on Thursday, a Palestinian attacker wielding a knife near the West Bank city of Nablus had been shot and put to death by the Israeli border guards. In the attack, no Israelis had been injured.

The assailant was shot and killed at the scene of the incident on Route 60 near the Palestinian town of Beit Umar, located south of Jerusalem between Bethlehem and Hebron.

Security forces have increased road patrols, made more raids and arrests, and introduced new checks on Palestinian motorists before they are allowed to use the same roads as Israelis.

Over 80 Palestinians have been killed in that same time frame, many of them attackers. The fence will have similar technology as the recently constructed Israeli fence on the Egyptian frontier meant to deter infiltration of militants or migrants seeking asylum.

This has included a significant increase in the number of troops deployed to the West Bank, particularly the Gush Etzion and Hebron regions, which have taken over from East Jerusalem as focal points for the violence.

Despite heightened security, according to a senior military officer, the army has proposed easing restrictions on Palestinians and providing ammunition to Palestinian security forces to avert attacks. Many of the Palestinians involved in the current round of violence have come from there. Palestinians say the attacks stem from a lack of hope for gaining independence after years of failed peace efforts.

An Israeli official said Netanyahu complained to Kerry about alleged Palestinian incitement and said any confidence-building gestures for the Palestinians would first require calm.

It said locals threw petrol bombs and rocks at the troops, who fired at one of them.
