Israeli aircraft attack Syrian army position, Israel denies any shot down

The Israeli Air Force said Syrian troops used surface-to-air missiles in the attempt but that it “at no point” compromised pilot safety.

Israel claim the attack was in response to a mortar bomb from Syria striking Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, and but denied of any shot down of their planes.

In addition, the embassy temporarily forbade U.S. government employees from “personal travel into the area north of Route 87 and east of Route 918 in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights”.

The Israeli military earlier said it targeted Syrian army positions after stray fire from its war-torn neighbour hit the Israeli-held zone of the Golan Heights on Monday. “Nothing true about what they claim”, he added.

The Israeli military quickly denied the report, saying there was “nothing true” about the regime claims.

Last week, Israeli warplanes struck Syrian artillery positions after a shell hit the Israeli side of the Golan Heights.

The Israeli air force responded by conducting missions overnight to target Syrian regime artillery positions.

Israel occupied the Golan Heights during the 1967 Middle East war.

Israel had repeatedly declared it would not intervene in the internal fighting in Syria. Both al-Qaeda affiliates fighters and militants from the Lebanese-based terrorist group Hezbollah are battling for control of the border region.

The seven-day truce in Syria, brokered by Russian Federation and the United States, is their second attempt this year by to halt the bloodshed.

Israel has for the most part refused to become involved in the conflict, only retaliating when errant strikes have crossed the border.
