The religious heritage of the city has made it a focal point for settlers, who are determined to expand the Jewish presence.

The Israeli army on Tuesday raided and shut down a Palestinian radio station, confiscating equipment and causing significant damage, after the military accused it of celebrating attacks on Israelis.

Hebron has always been considered a Hamas stronghold; 26 of the Palestinians who carried out stabbing attacks in the past few weeks are from the city and its surroundings.

Local residents say the demolition took place although they had obtained an order from an Israeli court to halt the plan.

And there is the politics of it all.

Nor can peace advocates take any comfort from the fact that overwhelming majorities of Palestinians believe that violence against Israelis is not only necessary but praiseworthy in virtually every circumstance.

They note his long history of supporting nonviolent resistance, reiterated as recently as September in a speech to the United Nations, and the continued cooperation of Palestinian security forces with their Israeli counterparts. The 19-year-old Palestinian terrorist from Hebron was then arrested by police. Jewish-owned structures in the city do not face such strict measures, according to the rights groups. Abbas has repeatedly argued that armed attacks counter Palestinian interests and has instructed his security forces to try to prevent them, but has not condemned the recent stabbings in deference to popular opinion.

“People are scared to go outside; we go home straight after work; we’re anxious about our kids. We can be friendly”. It is Israeli occupation, which must end for the sake of both Palestinians and Israelis. He fundamentally disagrees with Palestinian nationalist politics. Even if they had, we always could have been sent door to door. “They are my friends”. The willingness to see the enemy in a war as always in the wrong is not an exclusively Palestinian trait.

Since the beginning of October, the Israeli-occupied West Bank has witnessed frequent clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian youths in which scores of the latter have been killed.

“The Jerusalem economy simply can’t survive without the Palestinians of East Jerusalem working in West Jerusalem”, Gerlitz said.

The Israeli defense minister, Moshe Yaalon, said last month that the proper response to such attacks should bring about the “elimination” of the assailant. This occupation has been going on for nearly 50 years, and there is no sign of the “peace process” that the global community harps on about, never mind a process that would lead to peace with justice for the Palestinians.

The students then pulled back into the campus and rained stones on the Israeli border police who approached the gates.
