Israeli authorities re-arrest hunger striker Mohammed Allan
The administrative detention system allows a military court to order suspects to be detained indefinitely, subject to renewal every six months by a court, without charge or trial. On 18 June, Allan announced his hunger strike, during which he only drank water.

His lawyer Jamil al-Khatib confirmed to AFP that “He is currently on hunger strike”.
It said it would renew Allan’s administrative detention until November 4.
Mohammed Allan’s condition had improved enough for him to be discharged, the Barzilai hospital in southern Israel said earlier in the day.
Rights group Amnesty international warned in an urgent action appeal issued during August that the Israeli High Court’s ruling to suspend Allan’s detention was based on his medical condition alone – -the results of the MRI scan – and “took no account of the legality of his detention”.
Israel’s routine use of administrative detention violates the Fourth Geneva Convention and the international Convention on Civil and Political Rights.
Israel maintains that the administrative detention process helps to protect against both Palestinian and Israeli violence without making vital intelligence sources public.

Allan had been on a 65-day hunger strike, when he fell unconscious and was placed into a medically-induced coma.
Mr.Allan’s protest has continued despite Israel’s parliament passing a law in July that would allow the authorities to force-feed detainees to keep them alive.
At the beginning of September, Israel’s Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (who once advocated the mass killing of Palestinians) introduced a counter-terrorism bill that would, among other things, codify administrative detention, which would make matters even worse for the Palestinians and further debase the state’s moral onus.
Muhammad Allan, reputedly a member of Islamic Jihad, was arrested by officers from the Ashkelon Police, head of the local police Ch. Supt Shimon Portal said Wednesday.
Allaan had become a cause celebre in Palestinian society, and throughout his hospitalization Arab supporters and Jewish detractors staged rallies near the hospital, at times clashing with police.
Israel’s Shin Bet security service said on Wednesday that in light of Allan’s improved health and “intelligence information”, his release would “pose a danger to the peace and security of the region”.
Israel accuses the 31-year-old Allaan of links to Islamic Jihad, a Palestinian armed group.

His lawyers say he was never told of the accusations against him during his recent detainment, and friends have described him as “religious, but not radical”.
