The Palestinian approached a checkpoint at the Tapuah Junction near Nablus claiming he was sick, then attempted to stab the officer, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement. Another officer opened fire on Rafiq, killing him.

Al-Khuffash told Anadolu Agency: “During the eighties, Israel implemented force-feeding on a group of Palestinian prisoners who had been on hunger strike – three were martyred in the process”.

Jamil al-Khatib, Allan’s lawyer, told Ma’an News that the Barzilai Medical Center in Israel has illegally put the detainee under anesthesia, saying that it is necessary for the hospital’s administration to receive the consent of his parents before giving him the anesthetic, adding that there were no sufficient reasons to do so.

The protesters arrived in four buses from Jerusalem, Jaffa and northern Israel, and were planning to hold a vigil outside Barzili Hospital, where Allan is now being treated, but were blocked by the police for over half an hour.

In 2011, under a deal in which more than 1,000 Palestinians were freed by Israel in exchange for Gilad Shalit, a soldier held in the Gaza Strip, 42 Palestinian prisoners were exiled to countries in the Middle East. Israel said at the time they were too unsafe to be allowed to return to the West Bank or Gaza.

Allan was originally placed in administrative detention as it was believed he was a member of the militant Islamic Jihad group.

Right-wing protestors demonstrate against the release of Palestinian hunger striker Mohammad Allan, outside of Barzilai hospital in Ashkelon, Israel.

Police separated hundreds of people from each side, with the Arabs waving Palestinian flags, chanting their support for Allan and calling for his release.

The attack took place southwest of Ramallah on the busy Highway 443, connecting Jerusalem to Tel Aviv through the West Bank.

For now, doctors at the hospitals involved with Allan’s case have remained publicly united against the law and dozens of doctors protested this week against it. But some see keeping the patient alive as their primary ethical duty.

Palestinian prisoners have used hunger strikes before to draw attention to their detention without trial or charges, causing tensions to flare. Allan’s lawyer rejected the offer.

The law states that the Israeli authorities can force-feed prisoners if their lives are at risk.

Palestinians say the true goal of the law, which was passed on July 30, is to prevent prisoners from using hunger strikes to demand better conditions or their release. One of the assailants was shot dead, and another arrested after shot and lightly wounded by Israeli forces.
