The spokeswoman said those injured had been attacked “for nationalist reasons, because they were Arabs”.

Israel has boosted security across the country and imposed temporary restrictions on Palestinians wanting to enter the Old City of Jerusalem. The victims – one an Israeli Arab and the others citizens of the West Bank – were taken to a hospital.

The attack occurred in the city of Dimona.

An Israeli man has stabbed four Palestinians in Dimona in the Negev desert, reports say.

Violence has also spread in annexed east Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank, sparking fears of a third intifada. There is also frustration at the failure of Israeli police to track down the Jewish perpetrators suspected of an arson attack on a Palestinian family in the West Bank two months ago in which a child and his parents were killed.

Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral of a 19-year-old who killed two Israelis last week.

Five of the Palestinians who carried out the stabbings have been killed.

A Palestinian assailant stabbed an Israeli soldier and grabbed his gun Wednesday in Kiryat Gat, an Israeli city roughly 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Tel Aviv, police said.

“I think that carrying a licensed pistol and knowing what to do with it is imperative; it’s like doing reserve duty”, said the mayor in an interview with Israel’s Army Radio.

Ms Samri said attacks were probably “nationalistically” motivated. Police closed off the intersection where the attack took place.

He also likely fears a tougher response could anger the U.S. administration and lead to increased casualties on both sides, risking the outbreak of a full-fledged uprising like those in the 1980s and 2000s.

Zeid Raad al-Hussein said in a statement issued in Geneva on Thursday that he is “deeply concerned at the increasing number of reported attacks” by both Israeli settlers and Palestinians. “The forces reported hearing live fire from them”, an Israeli military spokesman told CNN.

Security measures were further tightened Thursday, with six metal detectors set up in the Old City and police stationed on rooftops. Muslim access to al-Aqsa has been restricted to men over 45 and women.

The sensitive site in Jerusalem has been at the heart of the recent Israeli-Palestinian unrest.

“There was a violent riot of 350 Palestinians who were hurling firebombs and rocks, rolling burning tires and shooting fireworks at the IDF forces”. They identified the attacker as an Arab man without providing details. A suspect, matching the description of the attacker, was later apprehended by police.

Video footage of the incident shows heavily armed Israeli forces open fire multiple times at her, despite her posing no threat to them.

But the attacks have spread beyond Jerusalem and the West Bank, the historical hot spots.
