Amiram Ben-Uliel a 21-year-old from a Jewish settlement in the West Bank was charged with three counts of racially motivated murder at Lod court near Tel Aviv.
The Jerusalem neighborhood of Armon Hanatziv was also the scene of a deadly attack in October in which three were killed, including a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen. The Palestinians say it is rooted in frustration stemming from almost five decades of Israeli occupation. It said all the suspects were part of a group of extremists that had carried out a series of attacks over the years and whose goal was to undermine the state.
Israeli forces sealed with cement the home of Safa Abu Jamal, Abu Jamal’s sister, after claiming to have secret information that it belonged to her slain brother.
Attorneys for the suspects said the authorities did not have enough evidence to convict their clients and accused the security establishment of using brutal and unorthodox investigation methods, including torturing the suspects and holding them for days without allowing them to meet with their legal counsels. The attack in Duma village and ensuing Israeli investigation laid bare fissures in Netanyahu’s coalition government where one ultra-nationalist partner voiced misgivings about the handling of Jewish suspects.
According to the indictment, Ben-Uliel admitted to planning and carrying out the Duma attack.
Most of the 21 Israelis who have died since October were killed by Palestinians in stabbings, shootings and car-ramming attacks.
A soldier was lightly injured Tuesday morning in a stabbing attack in the West Bank Etzion bloc south of Jerusalem, the Israeli army said.
Israeli police continue to hunt for the gunman, who also wounded several people, and who is believed to be a man named Nashat Milhem from the Arab village of Arara, in northern Israel.
Netanyahu called the video “shocking” and said it showed “the true face of a group that constitutes a danger to Israeli society and to the security of Israel”.
