Five Palestinians were killed Friday in clashes with Israeli forces in the West Bank and Gaza, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Three Pale-stinians were shot dead trying to stab Israelis in east Jerusalem and the West Bank on Saturday, as violence that has fuelled worldwide concerns of a full-scale uprising showed no let-up.

Minutes later in Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, a second Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli forces when he tried to stab a soldier at a checkpoint, police said.

Two of the attacks took place in the West Bank city of Hebron, where the Palestinian assailants injured an Israeli soldier and a female paramilitary border police officer with knives before they were shot, according to the Israeli police and military.

Rare glimmers of hope were on display Saturday evening as hundreds of Israelis and Palestinians marched through the streets of central Jerusalem in a joint peace rally. Authorities said they entered the site, torched by Palestinians on Friday, illegally.

In that time, 39 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire, including 18 labelled by Israel as attackers, and the rest in clashes with Israeli troops. Thirty-four Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire, including 17 labeled by Israel as attackers.

Israeli leaders have accused Palestinian political and religious leaders, including Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, of inciting violence at al-Aqsa by falsely claiming that Israel wants to change the status quo agreements that reserve the area for Muslim prayer only, while allowing visits by tourists, including Jews and Christians.

The last major confrontation was the Gaza conflict between Israel and Hamas in 2014, which left large sections of Gaza destroyed.

Another Palestinian died in clashes in Beit Furik near Nablus, while a Palestinian disguised as a news photographer stabbed and wounded a soldier before being shot dead outside a Jewish settlement in the West Bank.

In Washington, President Obama said the United States condemned “in the strongest possible terms violence directed against innocent people”, and he urged leaders in the region “to tamp down rhetoric that may feed violence or anger or misunderstanding”.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he is ready to meet Abbas to help restore calm.

Palestinian assailants have been carrying out near-daily stabbing attacks against Israelis that have spread from Jerusalem to elsewhere in the country.

He said the Council should adopt a resolution similar to “Resolution 904”, which was passed in 1994 following a massacre of Palestinian worshippers in the West Bank during the holy month of Ramadan.

The threat of a third intifada, or uprising, grew this month after Israeli forces restricted access to the al-Aqsa mosque, known by Jewish worshipers as the Temple Mount.

Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported the shooting death of a Palestinian there but mentioned no knife.

The shrine is under Palestinian control and off-limits to Israelis except on escorted trips organised by the army.
