ISRO sets new record, launches 20 satellites into space

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Wednesday launched a record 20 satellites from its Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota.

The rocket’s main cargo is India’s 725.5 kg Cartosat-2 series satellite for earth observation.

Built, launched and maintained by the ISRO, the satellite wighs around 680 kg.

ISRO has so far launched 57 satellites of foreign countries on eighteen different PSLV missions.

Wednesday’s mission will be the first time the ISRO is launching more the 10 satellites with a single rocket. The total weight of the satellite is approximately 1,288 kgs. Stay tuned for watching the live launch of PSLV-34.

The countdown exercise encompasses spacecraft health checks and preparations for propellant filling operation of second stage (PS2) of PSLV-C34 is in progress.

The 48-hour countdown began on Monday at 9.26 am for the launch of 20 satellites onboard PSLV C-34 from Sriharikota today.

“Spacecraft health checks and preparations for propellant filling operation of second stage (PS2) of PSLV-C34 are under progress”.

The images sent by Cartosat satellite will be useful for cartographic, urban, rural, coastal land use, water distribution and other applications. The satellites will help in agricultural sector, topography, earth imaging and maritime information.

It is also building a consortium which include Hindustan Aeronautics, Godrej Aerospace and Larson and Toubro to jointly assemble and launch the PSLV rocket by 2020 for both local needs and tap global customer launches.

Swayam (College of Engineering, Pune): The satellite aims to provide point to point messaging services to the HAM (amateur radio) community.
