It’s here! Solstice, full moon mark summer’s official start

Yep, this Monday brings the summer solstice – the first day of summer. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, but it’s not necessarily the warmest. Every year, thousands gather at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, England, to rejoice the prospect of sunny summer days.

The full strawberry moon, the first full moon during the summer solstice since 1967, will light up the sky all night long.

Monday’s moonrise is set for 8:33 p.m. The number of hours of daylight will continue to shrink until december 21, the winter solstice.

Today’s Moon was 100 percent full at 7:02 AM EDT, approximately 11.5 hours before the Solstice, which occurs at 6:34 PM EDT.

The sun will reach its most northerly point when it hits 23 degrees 27 minutes north latitude – in the Tropic of Cancer.

“The Sun gets super high so this Moon must be super-low”. Meteorologists consider summer to be the hottest three months of June, July and August, which in terms of weather for those of us down here on Earth is more realistic than mid-June to mid-September.

Even though most people consider June 21 as the date of the June Solstice, it can happen anytime between June 20 and June 22. The full moon will be visible throughout Monday night in Mansfield and the event will be broadcast live from the Canary Islands all day, courtesy of The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

In April, there was a Pink Moon, which is the smallest full moon, and in May, there was the Flower Moon- the full moon said to symbolize nighttime of growth for flowers. “In 2035, the full moon will hit one day before the solstice”.

Summer solstice 2016 is a little unusual.

What’s different about this year? And if it’s humid, the combination of thick air and a low hang in the sky can give the moon an amber glow, which gives it a nickname of the “Honey Moon”.
