HRD minister Smriti Irani, who is in Surat, said she had spoken to J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti who assured her that “no injustice will be done to any of them”.

“There was no serious or unnecessary demand by the students and we are trying to look at them with an open mind so that their academics won’t suffer”, he said.

“National Flag should be hoisted at main gate/fountain (The state flag may be hoisted as well)”, the students demanded. The non-Kashmiri students objected to this, leading to a clash and subsequent tensions.

Two groups of students had clashed with each other on March 31 after the West Indies defeated India in the T20 cricket World Cup championship.

The students alleged that police beat them up while they were holding protests at the campus and did not allow them to move out. “I am of personal belief that there should not be use of force by police against the students under any circumstances and I will also appeal to the students to maintain calm and peace”, Singh said. “Those students, who choose to leave, will be provided another opportunity to appear in Minor in lieu of the Minor, which is scheduled for April 11-14”, the notice further said.

Assuring complete security, he added that troops of CRPF and senior officers from the Jammu and Kashmir Police were deployed inside the campus and were constantly monitoring the situation. “BJP-PDP must stop this immediately”, Mr. Kejriwal tweeted.
