‘It’s quite a moment on television’

In an effort to benefit from a better-known candidate’s embarrassment, independent conservative presidential candidate Evan McMullin took a shot at Gary Johnson after the Libertarian candidate had a senior – or maybe stoner – moment in an interview when he didn’t recognize the key Syrian city of Aleppo. His best performance in a telephone poll in recent weeks has been 12 percent, while most have him considerably lower than that.
While Americans name terrorism and foreign policy as their second and third most important priorities in the 2016 election, their voting habits indicate that perhaps experience in these fields isn’t seen as the most important qualification. It turns out, perhaps, quite a bit.
Hello, I’m Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party candidate for president, and I don’t know what to do about Aleppo.
When host Joe Scarborough questioned Johnson’s lack of understanding about Aleppo, Johnson attempted to defend himself. In just one state, New Hampshire, the Nader vote was enough to give the presidency to Bush.
On the question about the best way to deal with terrorist threats in the United States, Weld – a former U.S. Attorney for MA – said he would create a 1,000 member Federal Bureau of Investigation task force dedicated to tracking lone wolf killers. The future of Aleppo has major humanitarian and strategic implications, which makes the error all the more shocking.
The blunder raised serious questions about his grasp of foreign policy, coming at a time of growing speculation that the Libertarian candidate, who is on the ballot in all 50 states, might play a decisive role if the November 8 election is close.
Johnson said that he blanked and that he’s actually quite well-versed in the politics of the Syrian crisis.
“In terms of Gary forgetting the word, I don’t know”. And in that ignorance, I’ve got good company.
That is an argument that Johnson and his running mate, former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld, both made in their speeches Saturday. Imagine how screeching a halt the debate would come to if he froze up like that on stage.
The notion that Johnson was thinking of an acronym drew further online ridicule – perhaps the “Alaskan Logging Expansion & Ping Pong Occupation?” one user opined. Trump, on the other hand?
“I hope I am on the debate stage, because I am different from the 2 of them in so many ways”. But it turns out Johnson’s domestic knowledge is equally weak.
“He is really very much of a leader”, Trump said of a man who has overseen the murder of his domestic political opponents and critical journalists, the rigging of elections, a global campaign of disinformation and a foreign policy whose first aim is to increase Russian influence at US expense.
