A cold snap dropped 17 inches of snow last week at Loveland, and temperatures were cold enough to rev up the snowmaking machines.

It’s the first time they’ve tied since 2008.
The resorts, high on the Continental Divide, compete each year to be the first to open in the state.
The ski season is getting underway as both Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Ski Area are open for business Thursday morning. “The conditions on the upper half of the mountain are absolutely incredible right now, and we’re working on coverage on the bottom”. The trails Catwalk, Mambo and Home Run will make up the opening-day run – more than a mile long and almost 1,000 vertical feet, the ski area said in a statement. “We have been waiting all summer for this moment and invite everyone to come up and help us kick off the ski season”.
Ticket, season pass and rental facilities opened at 8 a.m.at A-Basin and the Black Mountain Express lift began running at 9 a.m.
A-Basin won the contest a year ago, opening on October 17.

Copper Mountain, originally scheduled to open November 6 and making snow for almost a month, announced on Wednesday it won’t be able to open until Friday, November 13. Vail and Beaver Creek open November 20 and 25 respectively.
