It’s Time To Say Farewell To US Airways

On Saturday, the carrier will be completely absorbed by American Airlines, two years after the merger deal was struck to create the world’s largest airline.

In anticipation of the merger, American has cut nearly 200 flights from it’s schedule Saturday at US Airways Hub airports; Charlotte, Phoenix, and Philadelphia.

When the plane leaves here, there will be a water cannon salute to honor the airlines’ decades of service.

Although this merger means the end of the brand US Airways, its legacy is something that we will all remember. The airline is only the latest in a long line of airlines that have gone the way of the dinosaurs and are now extinct.

American Airlines said it expects a smooth transition, but asked passengers traveling Saturday and Sunday to arrive early at airports, with itineraries and boarding passes in hand in case of any hiccups.

“We combined the frequent-flier program(s) back in the spring”, said American Airlines spokesman Josh Freed, and in July the airline stopped taking reservations for US Airways flights.

This airline has been in business for 76 years and now has nearly 6700 daily flights, 100,000 employees and about 8 percent of U.S. domestic passengers.

US Airways had many memorable moments in history, but few stand out as clearly as the 2009 emergency landing of Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, in New York City.
