It will take longer to reach Windows 10 goal, says Microsoft

There are now around 350 million devices running Windows 10, Microsoft’s one-size-fits-all operating system that’s equally aimed at PCs, laptops, tablets, games consoles and the various wearables and smart devices peppering Microsoft’s ecosystem.

But even that relatively rapid rate would have to rise to result in one billion active Windows 10 devices by mid-2018.

Back in April 2015, when Windows 10 was initially released, Microsoft was already facing a dramatic decline in sales of its Lumia devices. The statement noted that Microsoft was pleased with the progress so far but the 1 billion target would take longer to achieve because the firm has shifted its focus to the hardware business.

Microsoft has released a new exciting update for the Groove Music app on Windows 10 devices that provides access to the new Explore feature with curated playlists. If the store in question doesn’t finish the upgrade by the close of business on that day, Microsoft will send you home with a new laptop. Unfortunately, while things are off to a great start with 350 million installs, things on the mobile front have been moving very slowly and now Microsoft has admitted that it won’t reach its goal by 2018 after all. Microsoft is slowly being forced into admitting that Windows 10 Mobile isn’t the platform to transform the company’s smartphone outlook.

In a statement obtained by ZDNet, Windows marketing head Yusef Medhi revealed that the company was revising their initial target due to the company’s mobile division performing poorer than expected.

Microsoft is hoping Windows 10 will help it rebuild loyalty among users who are increasingly relying on tablets, smartphones and other devices. This happened most recently with Windows 8, where most organizations stayed on Windows 7 and are now making the jump to Windows 10. Microsoft however maintains that Windows 10 will have better user experience than previous versions and also have upgraded security measures in place to prevent phishing, identity theft and viruses.
