The future of thousands of students at ITT Technical Institutes are now in limbo, after the for-profit college shut down across the country on Tuesday.
ITT has more than 130 branches in 38 states and enrolled students in online programs nationwide.
“From the email, it looks like there closed down for good”, said former student Christopher Wood. Andreotti-Briggs graduated from ITT Tech several years ago. However, even if they are able to transfer the credits to another institution, they will be ineligible for federal student loan forgiveness.
Nelson suggested the first option was a better choice.
The for-profit ITT Technical Institute closed its schools across the country Tuesday, affecting some 3,200 OH students at nine campuses across the state.
ITT Tech told by the Department of Education, it was a risk to students and taxpayers and to stop taking new students in need of financial aid. Effective today, ITT said it cut most of its 8,000 employees.
Students can apply to have their federal loans discharged, or forgiven, if they can prove that the school used illegal or deceptive tactics in violation of state law to persuade them to borrow money for college.
The U.S. Department of Education said Tuesday students now enrolled at ITT or those who withdrew within 120 days of its closure may be eligible to have their federal student loans discharged.
“I don’t know what to think right now”, ITT student Michael Chauvin said. But Beihl and other students say they doubt other college will accept her credits. The U.S. Department of Education said students may be eligible for federal loan discharge.

Students said when they got the notification they went to the Kirkpatrick Plaza where ITT Tech is located in Little Rock looking for answers.
