The House yesterday unanimously passed a resolution moved by opposition National Conference leader Omar Abdullah and seconded by the Chief Minister, appealing people of the state to maintain peace and communal harmony.

“The unruly scenes witnessed in the assembly (on Thursday) should not happen again”, he said. He added that if these people were “so sure” about people of Kashmir choosing India they should have no objection in this challenge. “It was in the Sopore convention of 1938 when the fight for independence was still ongoing in the subcontinent that National Conference took a stand. In 1947, when migrants from other Kashmir (PoK) came here, the people in Bijbehara welcomed them with milk and water”, Sayeed said.

The Chief Minister while further praising Sheikh Abdullah termed him a visionary personality. He said through this assembly resolution, a message should go out to the entire country to preserve its diverse and inclusive nature.

Days after he expressed concern over the Dadri lynching, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed reminded his BJP ally on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had secured votes “in the name of development”, and India “cannot survive if this atmosphere of hatred remains”.

He also thanked Omar Abdullah for bringing in the resolution. “Now we will not allow more such incidents in state”, Mufti said while referring to the communal violence that broke out in the wake of the partition of India and the recent controversy surrounding beef ban in J&K.
