J.K. Rowling Defends Hermione Casting: ‘White Skin Was Never Specified’
Despite having been depicted as white in the films and book illustrations, Granger is described by Rowling simply as having dark eyes and unruly hair, and has always been imagined as a person of color by some Potter readers and fan artists. She will star alongside Jamie Parker as an adult Harry Potter and Paul Thornley as Ron Weasley.

The story will also follow Harry’s youngest son Albus as he struggles with the massive weight of the family’s legacy.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is based on a new original story created by Jack Thorne, John Tiffany, and J.K. Rowling herself, and is set 19 years after the original story ended.
A black actress will play Hermione in a new Harry Potter play.
Even the person with the biggest say in the Harry Potter universe – the creator and writer JK Rowling – has defended the casting, explaining that she never explicitly named Hermoine’s race. In the forthcoming stage reimagining of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger will be played by the Swazi-born Noma Dumezweni.
As such, the actors cast to play Harry and his friends are a bit older than the sort you’d find studying at Hogwarts.
Furthermore, if people are going to use book descriptions of the characters as an excuse to make racist comments against Noma Dumezweni, why are they not complaining about the casting choices for Ron and Harry Potter himself as well?
Parker appeared on Broadway in The History Boys; additional stage credits include Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Proof and High Society. Previews begin June 7, 2016 with the Opening performances of Part One and Part Two on Saturday July 30, 2016.

Some of the actors from the film series also deflected negative reactions via social media, including Evanna Lynch, who portrayed Luna Lovegood, and Matthew Lewis, who portrayed Neville Longbottom.
