Muslims worldwide have begun celebrating Eid al-Fitr marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

At the end of Ramadan, this year on or around Thursday July 7 (depending on the sight of the moon), Muslims will celebrate with Eid al-Fitr – one of the two major holidays of Islam. However in India, people living in Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir celebrated the festival on Wednesday, as moon was sighted in Kargil, J&K and people of Kerala who follow Sha’afi tradition also celebrated Eid on Wednesday. Many countries have their own greetings in the their local language.

Super markets and small shops will be busy selling meat, sweets, spices, clothes and daily necessities on and several days before the Eid.
After Eid prayers, families receive their neighbors, relatives and friends with complete Moroccan hospitality by offering green mint tea, an indispensable element, before and after eating.
Earlier, the President issued Proclamation No. 6 declaring July 6 as a national holiday “to bring the religious and cultural significance of Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness”.
On the occasion of Eid, people usually offer morning prayers and gather with their family members to exchange gifts. Highlights include prayers, a food festival, and Arabic arts.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called for peace in his war-torn country at an official gathering at the presidential palace in Kabul.
Muslims in Ghana are joining their counterparts across the world to celebrate the “breaking of fast festival” after a successful Ramadan. Some have said this Ramadan has been more hard than usual.

HUNDREDS of people celebrated the end of Ramadan today with a huge Eid event at Newport’s YMCA Conference Centre. Athens has had no formal mosque since independence from the Ottoman Turks in 1832, but pledged last month to build one for its 200,000 Muslims.
