It is pertinent to mention that NIT was closed by the authorities on March 31 following a row during the India-West Indies World T20 cricket match.
According to reports, outstation students expressed sense of insecurity and tried to leave the campus on Tuesday.
There is tension prevailing at the campus of the National Institute of Technology in Srinagar following clashes between two groups of students last Friday.
Shri Ram Sena’s Jammu and Kashmir state president, Rajiv Mahajan strongly condemned the incident of NIT Srinagar in which J&K Police brutally hit the students from other states including Jammu with rifle butts.
In Delhi, HRD ministry officials said they were in touch with the management of the institute and the Director of the NIT has spoken to the students so that normalcy prevails.
They have maintained that permanent security should be provided from outsiders/locals who pelt stones at college students.
“Jitendra Singh, minister of state in Prime Minister’s Office, who is from Jammu and Kashmir, tweeted Wednesday morning and said, “#HRD team reaching #NITSrinagar. No student should suffer disadvantage in exam score because of shut down #MyGovIndia”.
The students threatened to leave NIT and move to respective states as their safety and security is being compromised by NIT administration and Kashmir Police.
Administration has held meeting with the NIT students to resolve the issue, Singh said, adding SSP Srinagar is camping in the area to ensure peace. The students have sought adequate security in the college and also want the Indian flag hoisted at either the main gate or at the fountain in the campus.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to state CM Mehbooba Mufti over the issue.
The Director, NIT Srinagar, assured the parents, students and all concerned that there is no cause for apprehension and students are safe and secure, said the statement. The deployment chased the mob and in this melee some of the students got injured who were given first aid, said the police.
