It was originally hoped Butland would be fit to start the season for Stoke but he experienced a setback in training when he damaged scar tissue around the injury.

As well as his club football, Butland will more than likely miss England’s World Cup Qualifiers in October against Malta and Slovenia, and also questions his availability for November’s qualifier against Scotland.

“A little update on the injury!” tweeted Butland on Friday morning.

The goalkeeper confirmed on Twitter that he would be undergoing a minor operation on Monday to resolve his ankle issues.

The 23-year old, who is challenging Joe Hart to become England’s first choice keeper, is concerned about his comeback from injury as the recovery could take a further eight weeks.

The Stoke goalkeeper picked up his injury just one day before Stoke’s opening game against Middlesbrough.

It is a further blow to new England manager Sam Allardyce after Fraser Forster was forced to pull out of his squad for the match against Slovakia on Saturday with an arm injury.

Stoke do not expect the England global to be available for a couple of months which prompted them to sign Lee Grant on a short-term loan from Derby County to provide back-up for Shay Given. Hughes said, “Bringing Wilfried in was a no-brainer for us to be perfectly honest, because he knows the Premier League and has scored plenty of goals at this level”. Find us on Facebook too!
