Jackson strikes out 11, pitches Padres over Red Sox

Whether the Yankees do the Red Sox a favor and make this a chance to get back in first or make it just a question of their ability to keep up, the Sox need to isolate that loss.

San Diego starter Edwin Jackson was superb.

“I think Drew gave us what we kind of anticipated, (105) pitches and six quality innings of work”, Red Sox manager John Farrell said. Pomeranz said he missed on a fastball to Rosales.

It’s not as bad as it was that one day in Detroit, but this is certainly not the lineup at its best. “I was struggling with my rhythm and timing and I had a hard time locating some of my pitches. I would have liked to get through that sixth inning but that happens”. Jackson struck out 11 batters in seven shutout innings, and even struck out the side in the 3rd and the 5th.

Boston’s best chance against Jackson came in the seventh. The Red Sox appeared ready to go on a run but their three game winning streak ended because their offense was ice cold which squandered an outstanding effort on the mound.

Chris Young instantly sent the first pitch of the 8th inning into the bleachers to cut the Padres lead in half. Hand immediately gave up a double to pinch-hitter Aaron Hill but worked his way out of the jam in unusual fashion.

“We got a couple of opportunities with really good hitters at the plate”, Farrell said. “But unfortunately we didn’t execute to tie the game up”.

Boston Red Sox RHP Steven Wright will have his next start skipped as he seeks a second opinion on his injured shoulder that he suffered while running the bases during an inter-league game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He will be available on Tuesday, Farrell said.

With one out, left-handed-hitting Travis Jankowski dragged his second bunt single off Pomeranz – making the Padres center fielder the only player in the major leagues with two bunt singles in back-to-back games this season.

Red Sox: RHP Clay Buchholz (5-10, 5.20) gets the nod for the middle game of the three-game series. His last and only start against Boston was in 2013, when he allowed two runs in five innings in a no-decision.

Padres: RHP Paul Clemens (2-4, 4.93) has set a career high with nine starts but his last one was rocky when he lasted by three innings, charged with two runs and four hits.
