Jacksonville State vs. LSU recap: Tigers redeem themselves in 34-13 victory

LSU wants to straighten out its passing game and offensive line — and win convincingly in the process — to gain confidence in its ability to bounce back from a season-opening upset loss to Wisconsin.

Brandon Harris of Parkway was benched and Danny Etling stepped in to provide the spark the LSU Tigers needed to get a 34-13 win over Jacksonville State on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.

“We all compete. Frankly, our quarterback can play better and will play better”.

The Tigers churned out 219 yards on 19 snaps and produced three touchdowns to erase a 3-0 deficit. I don’t know if that’ll happen.

“There’s a lot that can be said about a lot of things, and there are a lot of observations”, he said.

“Jim Leonhard has done a fantastic job with the secondary, and I thought those guys competed really hard last week”, UW defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox said.

As the first quarter ended, boos rained down in Tiger Stadium for the home team as Brandon Harris was 1-4 for 8 yards, a near interception, and 2 consecutive three and outs for the LSU offense. They were worse than that in 2014.

Miles was in a dogfight for his job at the end of last season but managed to hold on with the promise that his offense would change. That’s not “awfully productive”.

Miles gave no hints on who the starter might be and indicated both Harris and Etling might play.

“Once we stepped on the practice field Monday, we were done with it”, center Ethan Pocic said. “I promise you this: We’ve recruited well, and there’s some really, really good kids here and good people”. We have the players to do it. I’ve just got to make some better throws.

LSU’s offensive line, for one, needs to gain clarity on its blocking assignments and block better. Maea Teuhema replaced Boutte, and Miles was pleased with Teuhema’s performance.

“We all just need to get on the same page”. If the quarterback Miles envisioned is in there somewhere, they’ve got to find him, no matter how short time is.

Etling could also get a gauge of SEC competition from the sidelines on game day. He returned for the following game against Troy, but made only one reception for one yard. “He’s a great quarterback for those guys and we have to be ready”, LSU’s Adams said.

The Badgers will be without starting inside linebacker Chris Orr for the rest of the season, while inside linebacker T.J. Edwards (foot) is questionable to play Saturday. “We sincerely apologize for his mistake”.

Defensive tackle Davon Godchaux quickly grew exhausted of talking about last week as did his coach.

Not that it means anything, but Etling does talk about the game more specifically and with more brevity and clarity than does Harris.

Guice ignited the drive on the first play with a 32-yard dash to the LSU 43-yard line.

On offense, expect the Badgers to stay balanced unless they build up a huge lead. LSU coach Les Miles said late this week that Fournette’s status would be determined at game time.

“Hopefully, it’ll not have to be done for the necessity of victory”, he said. Wide receivers Travin Dural and Malachi Dupre combined for eight catches for 74 yards.
