Jacob deGrom, Mets get better of Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers

Daniel Murphy hit a 94 miles per hour fastball into the Mets bullpen in right field, and New York has a 1-0 lead on Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Dodger Stadium.

Kershaw was strong, but still wilted under the pressure in the postseason once again.

DeGrom came out the gate showcasing his high-octane fastball, which sat at 97-98 miles per hour in the first inning, and threw fastballs with 17 of his first 20 pitches. Who does deGrom share that record with? Ever heard of Tom Seaver? If that occurs, CBS Sports reported that Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria – a New York City resident and longtime Yankees season-ticket holder – is intrigued by the possibility of hiring Mattingly as his manager.

“There’s a lot of guys that I’ll be seeing for the first time this season”, Kershaw said told ABC News on Thursday. Jacob pitched an unbelievable game.

The Mets also forced Kershaw to pump up his pitch count. Certainly, deGrom was the better pitcher Friday night and Kershaw had that bad seventh inning in which he walked three batters.

On a night when the first-pitch temperature at 6:45 was 92 degrees, it didn’t help Kershaw to have to spend so much energy early. Kershaw will get the first game start and Zack Greinke will be next, while the Mets have lined up deGrom and Noah Syndergaard for the games in LA. If he is put on the Division Series roster Friday, he likely would start Game 4. That fell one shy of his career high, which he established in his third major league start – on May 26, 2014, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. It isn’t that Greinke isn’t willing, it’s just that his flesh is weaker.

After the game, Collins confirmed that deGrom won’t come back on short rest for Game 4 after working hard to throw 121 pitches tonight.

“I thought it was just her being very bad at singing”.

Kershaw has done it, shall we say, gooder than Greinke.

Of course, deGrom’s brilliant effort wouldn’t have mattered if the Mets didn’t muster a few semblance of an attack off Kershaw-a daunting task. He was dominant in his one start against the Dodgers this season, giving up no runs and striking out eight batters in 7.2 innings. On Saturday, the Mets will try to get greedy and will go for their second straight win against the host at the Dodgers Stadium at 9pm ET/6 pm PT on TBS in Game 2 of the NLDS.

Those runs proved decisive when the Dodgers’ offense celebrated deGrom’s departure from the game by finally scoring in the eighth inning on a Howie Kendrick double and a two-out RBI single from Gonzalez.

Kelly Johnson and Uribe joined the Mets shortly before Cespedes, acquisitions manager Terry Collins credited for turning around the team along with the his message to the players: If you hit, you’ll play. “There’s that added thing”. You guessed it: Adams took Kershaw deep, the Cardinals won 3-2, and the Dodgers’ season ended.

“At that point, I got to feel like he’ll go right-handed there against David”.
