Jacoby Brissett may need surgery for injured thumb

Jacoby Brissett, the third-string New England Patriots quarterback who led his team to a shutout, 27-0 victory over the Houston Texans on Thursday, suffered a thumb injury in that game that could end his season.

One week after losing Tom Brady’s backup, Jimmy Garoppolo, to a banged-up shoulder, the team is dealing with an injury to rookie passer Jacoby Brissett. Watt assisted on just two tackles in the game, and the Texans were only able to sack Brissett once in the game, for a loss of 6 yards. Patriots receiver Julian Edelman also knows the position – and could have been used in an emergency on Thursday night – but he’s far too valuable to start under center. They neutralized the pass rush by implementing quarterback runs mixed in with some play action that set the tone early on in the game.

As if winning the AFC East for 13 of the past 14 years wasn’t demoralizing enough, the Patriots’ 27-0 rout of the Texans on Thursday had to be another painful Bill Belichick dagger to the gut for the Jets and the rest of the division.

The status of Garoppolo, who was inactive in Week 3 after winning his first two National Football League starts, will determine the course of action the Patriots (3-0) take for Week 4 against the Buffalo Bills.

Brissett threw for only 103 yards but rushed for 48 more and a touchdown.

The bottom line here is practically anybody the Patriots start at quarterback has a great chance at leading the team to a win. Houston hosts the Tennessee Titans and New England hosts the Buffalo Bills on October 2.

The Patriots have 10 days to recuperate, with only a game against Buffalo (0-2) on October 2 remains before Brady could inexplicably return to a 4-0 team. Bottom line: “I needed to play better to allow our team to have an opportunity to try to win the ballgame”.

“I guess we’re just focused on the next week”. If he absolutely had to pick a basketball team it would be the Knicks, but he’d gladly trade them for a championship for any of his other three teams. This after Johnny Manziel and Austin Davis started the final two games of 2015. Later in the third quarter Nate Ebner forced another fumble that was recovered by Jordan Richards on the Texans’ 21. The patriots could be looking for yet another quarterback – or two – after third-stringer Jacoby Brissett injured his right thumb in Thursday night’s victory over Houston.
