Jailer dies after confrontation with inmate

Jones on Thursday was helping move an inmate from one part of the jail to another when the prisoner became argumentative and combative.

A Harris County Sheriff’s Office jailer has died following an altercation with a combative inmate. However, the department would not elaborate beyond that the cause of death was natural.

A Harris County jailer died Thursday after a confrontation with an inmate in which the detention officer fell, Sheriff Ron Hickman said. He is survived by his wife and two children, his mother and a number of siblings.

Hickman said officer Jones joined the Harris County Sheriff’s Office on November. 21, 2011 as a detention officer and served with professionalism and honor for three years and 10 months. “Anytime we suffer a loss in the line of duty, the collective law enforcement community rallies to support the family and loved ones of our fallen officer”.

No other details are immediately available. There’s no word yet on a cause of death or whether the inmate will face charges.
