Jamal held over ‘riot threat’

Claiming that his statement was “sensationalised” by certain media, especially the alternative media, in a press conference on Wednesday, the Sept 16 red shirt rally leader confirmed that he would not be at the rally, if it proceeds tomorrow.

Jamal, the Sungai Besar Umno chief, was detained by the Dang Wangi police serious crime division near the Ampang Jaya police headquarters after talking to the press at about 9pm. “Going further with another rally might actually be counter-productive to his previous efforts”, Mr Nur Jazlan told The Star on Thursday.

Jamal was called to the Ampang Jaya police station earlier, at around 7.45 pm, to give his statement in regards to his police report lodged Wednesday on several allegations, including stepping and spitting on a picture of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as well as on an alleged attempt to rape a Malaysian actress.

Mr Nur Jazlan said Malaysians were given the leeway to exercise their freedom of speech but they must not undermine racial sensitivities.

However when it comes to Jamal, he noted, the police only delivers “empty talk” without taking any action. “I will not attend”, he said.

Red Shirt protesters have threatened another rally in Chinatown on Saturday.

“Are you saying your first rally was not a success so you need another one? Bersih held rallies only once a year and even those had big messages conveyed and they didn’t go around threatening people”.

“If they have good ideas on how to help the authorities deal with counterfeit goods, they should meet them and discuss it”.

“I was just expressing my disappointment in the event that the ministry does not act on the demands made by the “red shirt” rally groups that congregated in Petaling Street on September 16″, he said in a statement.
