James Anderson in doubt for Boxing Day Test
Anderson experienced a stiffness in his calf muscle at the start of the South African tour and was made to undergo a scan on Tuesday.

The second Test in Cape Town, starting on 2 January, is his next target.
“It’s always a concern if your leading bowler or leading batter misses a game somewhere, but the last time he missed one we did pretty well”.
Woakes however bowled some fine outswingers in his first spell of the tour – although they would be swinging back into South Africa’s openers.
Finn is England’s preferred first change meaning they will still need a new-ball replacement for Anderson now he is ruled out.
“The leader of the attack is just that – it’s about being talkative and communicative with the group and making sure our bowlers adapt to the conditions quicker than their batsmen”, he said.
While gentlemen in England are abed, as Henry V would say, James Anderson will have a run-out in the nets at Kingsmead on Thursday – two hours ahead of GMT – to see if he can lead England’s attack in the opening Test on Boxing Day.
“It’s been a superb 12 days that we have been right here”.
Although Stuart Broad performed brilliantly in his absence in the Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, Anderson was immaculate during the recent tour of the UAE. He failed to recover in time for that problem and was ruled out of each of the remaining three matches in that series.
“We will have to play some strong cricket, be disciplined and play at our best if we are going to compete with them”, Root said this week.
Both the teams will be keen on getting back to the winning ways after losing their respective series in the sub-continent.
Certainly the current discrepancy in the odds – the home side are 8-11 to win the series while England are 3-1 – makes little sense to me, especially given the Proteas’ injury concerns.
England will be boosted by the availability of Steven Finn, who proved his fitness earlier in the week.
South Africa’s status as the top-ranked test-playing nation has been dented after their crushing defeat in India last month and is in danger of being eroded completely by England over the next month or two.

Bayliss, who is much more open about team selection than nearly all his secretive predecessors, confirmed that Steve Finn would probably play whatever happens about Anderson.
