It was a real battle of the long-running characters at the American box office this weekend.

The film cost at least $250-M to produce after incentives and rebates, so will need to do sizable business at the global box office, or $900-M+ by a few estimates.

Sony and independent studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer spent about $250 million to make “Spectre”, a significant uptick from the $209 million budget of “Skyfall”. “Without giving too much away, the difference here for me is, this movie draws together all four of Daniel’s movies into one final story, and he completes a journey”. There are still several foreign markets left to open, among them South Korea, Japan, France, Australia and China. Spectre is now following the success of the previous films, which have made billions since Sony took over. And that’s a pretty big deal when you consider this is the 24th James Bond movie, showing that the film franchise still has a lot of drawing power.

The movie which is garnering Oscar buzz will expand to more cinemas in the coming weeks.

The Peanuts Movie is expected to hold on and do well with families for several weeks to come at the box office. The top five were rounded out by Jack Black in “Goosebumps” and Steven Spielberg’s Cold War thriller “Bridge of Spies”, starring Tom Hanks.

“Spectre” took a simple first-place position with an estimated $73 million, according to Rentrak estimates Sunday, to become the second-biggest Bond opening ever. “There is a sense of completeness that wasn’t there at the end of ‘Skyfall, ‘ and that’s what makes this feel different”, the director said. For instance, SPECTRE opened in the United Kingdom when kids had a week off from school.

One country where SPECTRE is not doing almost as well as Skyfall is Russian Federation. SPECTRE has just grossed 370 million rubles there, while Skyfall grossed 259.1 million rubles in its debut in Russian Federation. It opened as No. 1 in all 71 territories and earned a total of $117.8 million. The feature film adaptation of the beloved Peanuts comic strip added a $45 million opening to help the box office rebound from the worst box office weekend of the year and the worst grossing Halloween weekend at the theaters in 16 years.
