James Cameron reveals a key plot detail for the upcoming ‘Avatar’ sequels
Earlier this year, Cameron teased at CinemaCon that there would be four instead of three sequels to the “Avatar” film. That’s five (5) Avatar films to come in the next half-century. Release plans aside, Cameron revealed to Variety that his vision for Avatar’s future very much revolves around Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their children.

The film has been in development for some time now, but it has been delayed due to James Cameron waiting for all the technology necessary for its development.
There are clues about the “Avatar” sequels to be found in “Toruk”, the Cirque du Soleil “Avatar” prequel that lands tonight at Barclays Center in Brooklyn for a four-night run.
According to Cameron, the plot of the second movie will follow Jake and Neytiri’s life as a couple.
While in NY for the premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s “Toruk”, which was inspired by the 2009 release and is set in the world of Pandora, director Cameron offered an update on the status of his Avatar sequels. “It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans”, Cameron said.
At the time, he declared Avatar 3 was pegged for release in 2020, with the fourth and fifth instalments following in 2022 and 2023. This date, of course, is a whole year ahead of his move every decade timeline.

“We’ve improved all of the CGI (computer-generated imagery) animation, the facial animation”, he said. The sequels are written by Cameron along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. “If it’s an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we’re able to fulfill on that promise”.
