However, now it’s heavily rumored that she’ll in fact be portraying the iconic character of Mary Jane Watson.

According to reports in The Wrap, the 19-year-old Disney actress has been cast as the leading lady and iconic love interest of the high-flying Spiderman and is the first non-white actress to do so.

Sony declined to comment on the revelation.

The cast and character sheet for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” some of the cast members and their roles for the movie for instance Angourie Rice will be playing Betty Brandt who is a friend and co-worker of Peter Parker (Tom Holland) at the Daily Bugle in the comics, Bokeem Woodbine as Herman Schultz/Shocker, one of the villains Spider-Man will face in the move, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Peter’s friend, Laura Harrier as Liz Allan and Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson, who both are Peter’s batchmates in high school.

“Undercover”, will play Mary Jane Watson in the newest Spider-Man film.

Zendaya will be playing one of Peter Parker’s classmates in the upcoming movie.

Yesterday, a rumor broke out that the character of Mary Jane was being played by a young black woman, Zendaya, and all hell broke out on the Internet (again).

People have taken to social media to express a lot of disappointment over this casting role since the character Mary-Jane is typically known as a white red-head and not someone with dark skin.

She’s also received a whole load of support from Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn, who defended her in a lengthy Facebook post.

Holland was able to take time out of his busy schedule because “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is filming in the city, plus it’s just a really lovely thing to do. “For me, what makes MJ (Mary Jane) is her alpha female playfulness, and if the actress captures that, then she’ll work”, Gunn continued.

“People get upset when something they consider intrinsic to a comic book character changes when adapted for a film”, the director wrote. “And, for the record, I think Zendaya even matches what I think of as MJ’s primary physical characteristics – she’s tall, thin model – much more so than actresses have in the past”. Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit regular theaters and IMAX on July 7, 2017. While we’re still waiting on official confirmation from Sony, Marvel or Zendaya herself, it didn’t stop fans from going into a frenzy when the news first broke-a frenzy which, as it turns out, was made up of those who were excited about the potential versus those who… were decidedly not.
