James Jones heading back to Packers on one-year deal

Shortly after his visit to the Green Bay Packers, it has been reported that he has signed a deal with the team.

In 2014, his only year in the league in which he wasn’t wearing the green and gold, he played for the Oakland Raiders and had decent numbers there as well.

With the Packers, he turned into a reliable target for MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers, including 14 touchdown catches in 2012.

Despite the unusually wide gap between playing time after Rodgers was conspicuously inactive for the Green Bay Packers’ final two preseason games, the Packers’ irreplaceable leader at quarterback has no doubt about his readiness for the start of the season. For his career, Jones has registered 383 receptions for 4,971 yards (13.0 avg.) and 43 touchdowns while starting 57 of 120 games played.

“To be honest with you, I didn’t even think about [the injury opening the door for a return] man”, Jones said.

It likely would be a one-year deal no matter who ends up signing Jones, which would fit well for Green Bay. He signed as a practice/offseason player for the Jets last July but did not make the 53-man roster of the New York squad.

Coleman excels at working over the middle, making the kind of catches that can move the chains in the regular season.

The Packers already have five receivers on their roster.

Without Nelson and a questionable Cobb, makes Jones signing seem like a relief to the Packers.

“I assume so until I’m told otherwise”, he said Monday.

Younger players such as Rollins and Gunter could add a jolt to coverage teams, while rookie receiver Ty Montgomery might eventually be a factor in the return game. “We just need to see from all those guys battling for those two spots just some more consistency”.

“There will be new concepts (for Jones to learn); there are every year”.

On WR Brandon Coleman and WR Willie Snead: “We wanted them to get some early work in that first portion of the game”.

The Bears are coming off a woeful season and things didn’t get much better during the off season as they lost Marshall and will be without 2015 first round draft pick Kevin White for the foreseeable future after he too sustained a preseason injury. “Well, he’s a good football player, let’s not lose sight of that”, pointed out Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy, referring to the capacity of James Jones to follow through with his promise.

A lot can be taken away from this game, good and bad, for both teams, but on this night, the Eagles walked into Lambeau Field and looked like the superior team.
