James Schooling halts Michael Phelps’ golden run

Phelps was seeking his 23rd Olympic gold medal and his fourth straight in the 100-meter butterfly, but he was denied by Singapore’s Joseph Schooling, who got off to a blistering start and built a lead that even Phelps couldn’t overcome.

Michael Phelps wasn’t about to be stopped.

The rivalry between Phelps and Lochte spans 12 years, but simply calling them rivals is only half the story, CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reported. Instead, Lochte slowed dramatically after the backstroke leg.

“Well, it was sentimental. Every chance I get on those blocks and he’s right there, it’s awesome”, Lochte said of Phelps, who was in the adjacent lane. “I felt great the first quarter”. I don’t know what to say.

He eventually worked out his error, saying after several seconds of silence that he had mixed up his lanes. I gave it my all. This is it. I said it a bunch before. “Ray is like a big brother to me”.

This time, he didn’t even make the podium. American Tom Shields came in seventh.

“The goal was 8:05 or better”, she said.

“To my friends and me, Schooling has always been the name to watch and support because he is a Singaporean, born and bred here”, he told the BBC. “I hope it does go away”.

Carlin knows silver was the best she could ever get against Ledecky, who also beat her in the 400m and whose 800m time of eight minutes 4.79 seconds nearly knocked two seconds off her own world record. “I want to win just like anybody else”.

“I’m not going four more years and I’m standing by that”, he insisted after finishing in a three-way tie for silver in the 100m butterfly final.

On the medal stand, though, the emotions swept over her.

And as the Baltimore Sun noted, it could also revive one of the most iconic moments of the Rio Olympics so far.

“This is Singapore’s first Olympic gold medal ever and also our first medal for ‪the Rio Olympics”, he wrote in a post that gathered tens of thousands of likes and comments.

The final races for Michael Phelps will take place on Friday and Saturday evening. That’s what happened in 2012, when Canada’s Derek Drouin, Britain’s Robbie Grabarz and Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim won high jump bronze. After Phelps’ gold-medal win on Thursday, Lochte said he would be surprised if Phelps quit now. He could win six here. I said to Ryan [Lochte], ‘Man, how did we do all of these events in 2008 [at the Beijing Olympics]?’ My body is in pain.

“That hurt a lot.my body is in pain, my legs are hurting, I’m exhausted”.

Wiggins, along with Edward Clancy, Steven Burke and Owain Doull beat Australia in a world-record time to win the men’s team pursuit at the Rio velodrome.

“I think Chad, Michael and Laszlo should still be the face for butterfly”. That’s an exciting one. “The memories mean more than the medals to me”. It’s insane to think Ryan and I have been on Olympic and national teams since 2004. “And one of the toughest too”.

In 21.4 seconds, Ervin went from one end of the pool to the other in a furious dash, edging the defending Olympic champion, Florent Manaudou of France, by a mere hundredth of a second.

“Honestly, I think we’ve both just grown up”. If you like watching the best swimmer in the world scrap for victory in her most challenging event, she did that in the 200 freestyle. “We’ve all had ups and downs throughout our lives”. I wanted to be like him as a kid.
