James Taylor says England had ‘a solid opening day’ against South Africa

England captain Alastair Cook confirmed that Chris Woakes will replace the injured James Anderson for the Boxing Day Test against South Africa in Durban.

Sun Bowl–Washington State vs
This team and this season were special, and as the last few seconds of the Sun Bowl ticked off, I didn’t want it to end. The five-play, 65-yard drive included a 20-yard pass to Mickens that was upheld after a challenge from Southern Miss.

Nick Compton (40 not out) and James Taylor (41 not out) shared a 71-run partnership to revive England and give the touring side a foothold in the match.

He reasoned that if the city’s health inspectors gave the restaurant permission to open, the food there must be safe to eat. The restaurant was closed down few days ago when 136 college students from Boston fell sick after eating at the place.

Compton, though, remains unbeaten on 63 heading into day two and will be aiming for a third Test century in his first innings since coming back into the side following a two-and-a-half year absence.

“It was satisfying to get a 50 because every time you get to the middle, regardless of the situation or who you are playing, it’s nearly trying to prove a point and show people what you can do and grab that opportunity with both hands”, said Taylor, who was caught behind off Dale Steyn just before the close.

“I was really enjoying batting with Nick”.

He got off the mark with a clip to leg for two off the first ball he faced from Kyle Abbott and looked comfortable at the crease, although the ball he faced against Steyn was the last delivery before the rain.

“We’ve been looking for reverse swing throughout this last session – we probably weren’t as disciplined on the ball as we could have been – so tomorrow will be a refocus on that and we’ll try to get some reverse swing because I think we saw from today as soon as it’s moving sideways, it’s a different game”. It sets the tone for the team.

The heavy rain arrived at 12 for one to badly disrupt proceedings and, on resumption, Hales got out straight away.

The England captain fell to an edge to the slips off fast bowler Dale Steyn after the tourists were put into bat in tough batting conditions.

Even without Jimmy Anderson in England’s attack, I suspect they will know exactly what length to bowl to cause maximum problems for the South African batsmen. It ended swiftly when offspinner Dane Piedt’s first delivery of the game turned sharply and trapped Root lbw back near his stumps for South Africa’s third wicket, with England then 49-3.

Both Taylor and Compton are now on the comeback trail after long layoffs since making their Test debuts in the year 2012.

The left-handed Elgar, who reached 1000 runs in his 22nd Test when he had 35, went to a 93-ball half-century with a straight six off Ali. Despite his height, Taylor stood up to Steyn and fellow quicks Abbott and Morne Morkel, using the hook and pull to good effect among his nine fours.

To go along with his 114 in the first warm-up match of the South Africa tour, as well as 67 not out and 60 in the one-day series against Pakistan, this is shaping up to be a career-defining winter for the Nottingham-born ace, who turns 26 on January 6.

Taylor, laying claim to a long-term job at number five, played with a freer spirit on his way to 70 before succumbing to Steyn late in the day.
