Jamie Vardy equals Premier League goalscoring record

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy equalled a Premier League scoring record with his goal just before half-time against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Vardy helped Leicester win for the fourth time in five games and took them to 28 points – 12 shy of the 40-point mark teams bid to hit to dodge the drop.

But instead Manuel Pellegrini’s men found themselves 3-0 down inside 32 minutes after an Eliaquim Mangala own-goal preceded two sweeping Liverpool moves finished by the Brazilian pair of Phillippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino respectively.

The Manchester United legend netted his 10 goals back in 2003 and nobody has since matched the goalscoring feet since.

“I know there will be a few matches when we don’t take a point but maybe the next we’ll take a point”.

The top-flight record was set by Stan Mortensen, who scored in 11 successive matches for Blackpool in Division One in 1950-51 and Vardy will equal that if he scores against Manchester United next week.

“I kept getting it [the message] sent to me and fair play to him for doing it. He didn’t have to do that”, Vardy told Sky Sports News. We will see what happens next week now against Manchester United. “We’ll fight for each other right until the end and it shows on the pitch”.

Cazorla missed a penalty in the 84th when he slipped as he was about to shoot to complete a miserable day for Arsenal, who lost two more players – Francis Coquelin and his replacement, Arteta – to injury.

“When a squad has a striker who scores goals it is good”.

“Words that I can use (to describe Newcastle’s performance are): woeful, embarrassing, hopeless, inept”, said the former Newcastle striker.

The result lifted Leicester to the top of the Premier League, but Vardy said they are not looking too far ahead.

Elsewhere, Ross Barkley scored twice before half time to contribute to Everton’s 4-0 rampage over bottom-of-the-table Aston Villa at Goodison Park.
