Jamie Vardy: Leicester City striker says he has to pinch himself

Jamie Vardy is two matches away from equalling Jimmy Dunne’s all-time record of scoring in 12 consecutive top-flight matches for Sheffield United in 1931.

Vardy’s headline-making goal was supplemented by Leonardo Ulloa and Shinji Okazaki, as City ran riot at St James’ Park. “I hope Wayne Rooney, who is ill and maybe Anthony Martial can come back and play against PSV Eindhoven next week”, he added.

“It’s not easy to equalise a big champion like van Nistelrooy”. It is not like I can’t play there but it is hard for me because I have the quality to make goals in an advanced person. “It is good for everybody when a team has a striker who is scoring goals, it gives you a lot of confidence”, said the manager.

The forward has been in exceptional form this season, scoring an unimaginable 13 goals in as many appearances – a feat that has only ever been achieved once in Premier League history, by former Manchester United legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

Vardy made his global debut for England in 2015.

The 28-year-old England global Vardy says it is down to studying every detail of his opponents’ weaknesses during the week – and sessions in a cryotherapy chamber.

“In my career I’ve known just one player who took the same route to the top”. “It’s not important, the shirt, it’s how the players play”. It was the same when I managed [Gianfranco] Zola.

“But it wasn’t just Jamie Vardy, Leicester are a well-drilled unit and you don’t get to the top of the league unless you have that”.

United return to action a week today when they take on Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. I want to see the horses at the end of the race.

Manchester City, leaders at the start of the day, conceded three goals in the first 32 minutes as Liverpool got their most impressive win yet under new coach Juergen Klopp, while Arsenal also blew an opportunity by losing 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion. “After, we can speak about other things but now we are very, very focused on our goal”.

The Magpies had a clear chance to level shortly after the restart when Aleksandar Mitrovic met Sissoko’s pass but fired a tame effort straight at Kasper Schmeichel, but Vardy smashed an effort off the crossbar after holding off Mbemba as Leicester’s main threat again came close.

“I think that’s our worst performance of the season”, he said.

For all his talk of progress, Newcastle have won two league games under him, against two teams playing in the Championship last season.

“At the moment, we do not know what we are going to get”.

“I thought the opponents were excellent and I congratulate Jamie”.
