“This enterprise will launch a revolution in Indian railways and speed up Indian journey into the future”, Prime Minister Modi said after signing several bilateral agreements with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe at Hyderabad House here.
On joint Defence production, Modi and Abe welcomed the conclusion of the Agreement concerning the Transfer of the Defence Equipment and Technology and the Agreement concerning Security Measures for the Protection of Classified Military Information, which further strengthens the foundation of deep strategic ties.
The bullet train network will link India’s financial hub Mumbai with Ahmedabad in Modi’s home state Gujarat.
Japan is the only country in the world to have suffered a nuclear attack. “The Kyoto Varanasi partnership is a great symbol of our relationship and we are happy to hear that Japan will build a convention centre at Varanasi”, he said.
The countries also agreed to cooperate on peaceful use of nuclear energy, the final deal for which will be signed after the technical details are confirmed, the Associated Press reported.
Charting a new course, India and Japan on Saturday announced a series of military and strategic agreements and understandings.
Asked about issues relating to reprocessing, he said any solution to the issue with Japan will be in consonance with India’s long-standing policy.
“For the first time Japan will import cars from India and Maruti will manufacture it”, he said while addressing the India-Japan Business Leaders Forum here. If that happens, it could be Tokyo’s first major sale of weapons since Abe lifted a ban on export of defense equipment in 2014.

Modi said recent economic indicators in both India and Japan were extremely encouraging, especially in the light of the global economic slowdown.
The two countries’ growing closeness is also seen to be driven by common concerns over the rise of China, particularly with Beijing flexing its muscles in territorial disputes in the East China Sea and South China Sea.
“They called for an immediate commencement and early conclusion of negotiations on a non-discriminatory, multilateral and internationally and effectively verifiable Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT) on the basis of Shannon Mandate”, said the joint statement.
