Japan and South Korea Make Peace on World War II ‘Comfort Women’

South Korea and Japan reached a final, irreversible agreement on Japan’s wartime sex slavery of Korean women, but complaints remained as Seoul failed to extract Tokyo’s acknowledgement of “legal” responsibility for the war crime. Mr Abe spoke after a phone call with Park Geun-Hye, South Korea’s president, who has called the issue the “greatest stumbling block” to friendlier ties.

“It’s not compensation. It’s a project to recover the honor and dignity of all comfort women and to heal their emotional wounds”, he said.

Scholars continue to debate the number of women exploited. The “comfort women” have been the most painful legacy of Japan’s colonial rule of Korea, which lasted from 1910 until Japan’s World War II defeat in 1945. The two countries announced a deal that included an apology from the Japanese prime minister and a fund to support the 46 surviving Korean women.

The MFA’s comment comes after an agreement made at a meeting between the Japanese and the Republic of Korea (ROK) Foreign Ministers on Monday.

Under Monday’s agreement Seoul will try to relocate a statue symbolizing comfort women which now stands in front of the Japanese embassy through consultations with relevant NGOs, Yun said.

The issue of comfort women and a Japanese apology remains politically charged in Taiwan, with regular protests.

“Unfortunately for these women, Japan has often denied responsibility and blamed their suffering on war”.

Some say Abe aimed to show consideration to government supporters who are in opposition to the recent deal.

In November North Korea had said the issue of “comfort women” is not exclusive to South Korea, and Pyongyang must be included in the talks between Seoul and Tokyo. The agreement came after they met for the first time on the sidelines of a summit in November.
