What we aren’t familiar with are 8K broadcasts, that resolution is 16 times better than what is available now.

While 4K content is still rare in most of the world, Japan is set to move ahead with test broadcasts of both 4K and 8K content. We’re talking a 4320p-resolution video, which is four times that of 4K and 16 times the resolution you’ll get with full high-definition (FHD). The format used by NHK to broadcast 8K content is called “Super Hi-Vision” and it is accompanied by 22.2-channel surround sound.
“This summer’s Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games will see 8K live-broadcasts, and preparations are moving forward for all of the NHK stations around Japan to have 8K receivers in place so that everyone can experience watching it”.
NHK is running these broadcasts as a test to prepare for a more official 8K launch in 2018, and to ensure it has all the kinks ironed out in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The super high res broadcasts are sent via satellite. The channel broadcasts from 10am until 5pm, but since no-one actually has the equipment necessary to receive the channel at home, NHK is installing viewing stations around the country for the public and will hold events created to showcase footage from the Rio Olympics.
