Japan official quitting amid Tokyo 2020 stadium row

“I forthrightly extended our apologies regarding the change in plans for the national stadium”, organizing committee head Yoshio Mori said after a meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach and his executive board in Kuala Lumpur.

“We advised…that…against a backdrop of rocketing annual increases in the cost of building in Tokyo, and in the absence of any global competition, the early selection of a limited number of construction contractors would not lead to a commercially competitive process”. Construction of the stadium was supposed to begin in October and be completed by May 2019 in time for the Rugby World Cup. The Japanese people, Government and design teams in Japan and the UK have invested a huge amount of time, effort and resources to deliver an adaptable design that can meet the brief and budget set by the Government for a new National Stadium. “But they said it was not necessary to feel apologetic”.

“We respect and can understand in such times you would not like to build the most expensive stadium in the world”, Bach said at a news conference.

A statement from her firm said Japanese officials had been warned about the possibility of soaring costs. He gave us encouragement to work hard to complete the stadium by Games time.

According to a statement issued on Zaha Hadid’s website, the project-ending cost of the New National Stadium is not the fault of the design, but rather the “inflated costs of construction in Tokyo, a restricted and uncompetitive approach to appointing construction contractors, and a restriction on collaboration between the design team and appointed construction contractors”.

“With its excellent track record in broadcasting, we believe that it will provide fantastic coverage across the region of each edition of the Olympic Games, including free-to-air television coverage. beIN Sports has also committed to providing unprecedented promotion of Olympic sports all year round, including significant support for the Olympic Channel in the future”. “Beijing’s logo in 2008 reflected both an Asian and sporty aesthetic in a design that looked like a wooden stamp as we use in this part of the world, and Sydney 2000 reflected the country’s unique heritage by incorporating a boomerang into the design”, said Sato, adding that the Tokyo 2020 logo lacked impact, and was overly similar to the J. Two Japanese construction giants, Taisei Corp. and Takenaka Corp., which were part of the earlier plan, are expected to put in another bid.

“We want to make sure that all the Olympic requirements are taken into consideration and there are no surprises… neither for the government, neither for the IOC”. The UCI has resisted Japanese proposals to move cycling from Tokyo to Izu, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) outside the capital.

Until now, the IOC did business with the Arab States Broadcast Union, who stil have the rights to next year’s summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
