Japanese father stabs 12 yo son to death for not doing homework

The father said he’d stabbed the boy “by mistake” during an argument in their apartment over an exam the boy needed to pass to be admitted to an elite private middle school.

Satake took his son to the hospital immediately after the incident, but Ryota died soon after arrival. The son was confirmed dead from loss of blood an hour later.

His dad, 48-year-old Kengo told police he ” argued with his son for not studying” for a test at the private school.

“The father stabbed his son in the chest with a kitchen knife”, a police spokesman said, declining to provide details of the motivation.

Pressure for children to attend top schools can be intense in Japan, where is is seen as a sign of prestige.

Satake was arrested after hospital staff informed the police of the attack, the spokesperson added.

Japan was recently in the spotlight after a couple left their seven-year-old son in the woods as punishment for throwing stones at passersby.

Ryota was aiming to enter one of the leading private junior high schools in Aichi prefecture and his father had regularly reprimanded him for not studying enough.

According to reports from local media, the boy’s mother was at work when the incident took place.
