In The Hollywood Reporter’s exposé, the outlet seemingly revealed that Warner Bros. was in possession of an alternate cut for Suicide Squad prior to release – a cut that was allegedly more in line with the film’s trailers than the sombre end product marching into theaters today. The weekend’s only other wide release, EuropaCorp’s “Nine Lives”, is yet to report Thursday numbers.

In terms of the movie’s domestic release, it has made $20.5 million on its opening Thursday night. It has an abysmal 27 percent score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and a 41 on Metacritic. Here’s is a look back at all of them.

“Squad” – like its predecessor, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” – took a drubbing from critics after the review embargo was lifted earlier this week, leading many DC fans to angrily protest.

Despite the bad reviews that “Suicide Squad” initially got during its premiere, it is now considered a box-office success. Their assignment: defeat an enemy they are uniquely suited to take on in exchange for some relief in their sentences. The movie has an ensemble cast including Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis and Cara Delevingne.

A $140 million opening for “Suicide Squad” would easily break the all-time August record, now held by rival Marvel’s 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy“, which hauled in $94 million during its first weekend. The film is the next step in the DC Comics and Warner Bros. expanded universe and cost around $175 million to produce.
