In her resignation letter she wrote: “Despite an active campaign in Coventry, last week’s referendum result was a great disappointment to many Labour members and supporters alike”.

“Therefore, he has my full support”.

“I note that you continue to refer back to the mandate you received last September”.

Mr Corbyn has vowed to fight any challenge to his position and Ms Nandy is rumoured to be considering a bid for the leadership herself.

Following last week’s European Union referendum, Alexander said she no longer believes the Labour leader can win the next general election.

He said: “That’s unfair”.

“Given that opinion is evenly split, I feel I can confidently follow my own views on this matter”.

Responding to these calls, the former health minister claimed said they are “completely unrepresentative of the vast majority of Labour members”.

“I suspect that Jeremy may have voted to leave”.

Washington and Sunderland West MP Sharon Hodgson has joined the rebellion against Jeremy Corbyn.

Before being appointed as the shadow health secretary, Abbott was the shadow secretary of state for worldwide development.

The Makerfield MP had been the shadow minister for consumer affairs and science.

She praised Mr Corbyn for being “one of the kindest and most committed public servants in politics” – but said that party members and “many, many Labour voting members of the public” told her they did not have confidence in his leadership.

Mr Corbyn lost 12 members of his shadow cabinet on Sunday and further resignations have already taken place on Monday ahead of a crunch meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

Labour’s leadership election procedures require candidates to be nominated initially by their fellow MPs.

“Together with our colleagues from the centre left of the party – John Healey, Nia Griffith, and Kate Green – we just met with Jeremy Corbyn to discuss the future of our party”, they said.
