Universal’s “Jason Bourne”, once again starring Matt Damon as the titular hero, earned 60 million US dollars from 4,026 locations in its debut weekend, according to estimated figures released by comScore on Sunday.

After nearly a decade Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass returned to the world of Bourne, turning in a movie that enjoyed the second highest opening of the franchise.

In third was the R-rated Bad Moms with $23.4 million in its first weekend in release. And that was enough for a 3rd-place finish behind Jason Bourne and Star Trek Beyond, which earned $24-M-plus in its 2nd frame to cross the $100-Mmark.

Matt Damon reprised the spy role after a nine-year hiatus, during which he and director Paul Greengrass suggested that the franchise was finished.

The film marks the return of Matt Damon to the series that propelled him to the top of the Hollywood A-list.

Aside from Damon, the action packed movie also stars Tommy Lee Jones (U.S. Marshal), Alicia Vikander (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), Vincent Cassel (Irréversible), Julia Stiles (Out of the Dark) and Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Even with all of this competition, Jason Bourne, which had already been tracking to have a solid opening weekend, ended up leading the pack at the box office, even as Bad Moms had a solid weekend on its own. With Legacy tarnishing the brand and more so-so reviews, Jason Bourne was always going to struggle to match its highly regarded (true) predecessor in the series. Jason Bourne is the No. 1 film domestically, internationally and worldwide this weekend, including No. 1 openings in 27 territories. The R-rated comedy led by Mila Kunis scored as one of few films that targeted women this summer, says Dergarabedian, and provided ideal counterprogramming to the male-focused Bourne. The irreverent comedy under performed as studio expectations were predicting $30 million for its opening weekend.

The weekend’s other major new wide release managed a respectable debut. It was made for about $120 million, not counting marketing expenses.
