Jason Bourne wins the weekend at the box office
Yes, it was a touch off the pace of its $30 million expectations, but it’s already made back its $20 million production budget and change. Bad Moms, good money. Star Trek BeyondStar Trek Beyond may have come in second for the weekend with $24M, but it also suffered the biggest drop off for a second weekend of the rebooted series. Horror movies, of course, tend to sell more tickets to women. The actor had set out the most recent installment, 2012’s “The Bourne Legacy”, and was hesitant to reprise the role.

To say that I love the original Bourne trilogy is a massive understatement.
Looking ahead to next weekend, Warner Bros. will finally unveil their long-awaited Suicide Squad adaptation, which will go up against EuropaCorp’s Nine Lives.
The first film in the franchise, The Bourne Identity introduced us to amnesiac hero Jason Bourne, and was an instant success.
Coming in second is “Star Trek Beyond” with an estimated $24 million. That’s not really surprising, although it seems Beyond is falling a faster than I initially thought, so it will probably end up around $150-160 million in the US.
Executives at Universal Pictures have stated that they plan to keep star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass a part of the franchise “for as long as they’re physically able”, but I doubt the wisdom of that goal.
The original R-rated comedy “Bad Moms”, from the writers of “The Hangover”, also had reason to crack open the champagne this weekend.
The only other two newcomers at the U.S. box office was Bad Moms and Nerve, and both fell slightl short of predictions. For R-rated female-led comedy Bad Moms it didn’t matter as it still opened strongly pulling in $23.4 millions. That comedy finished with $63.1 million domestically, which is where this might be headed too. By the same token, Bad Moms is bolstered by solid audience reviews, as it now holds an “A” rating on Cinemascore.
Illumination and Universal’s “The Secret Life of Pets” took third place with $29.5 million.
The global top five looks like this. The final battle in the film is among the best I’ve seen all summer and is heart racing. So I guess this is Illumination’s next big franchise now.

It took over $120 million to produce “Jason Bourne” that boasts a stellar collection of $11.2 million in South Korea and $10.2 million in the United Kingdom, second to “Finding Dory” with a grossing of $10.8 million.
