Universal’s “Jason Bourne”, once again starring Matt Damon as the titular hero, earned 60 million USA dollars from 4,026 locations in its debut weekend, according to estimated figures released by comScore on Sunday.

“Jason Bourne”, which returned Matt Damon to the title role after he sat out “The Bourne Legacy” in 2012, found more favor with audiences than critics.

How does the opening weekend for “Bourne” compare to other summer hits this season? The $60 million start to “Jason Bourne” is quite a feat when you consider that the film opened just 13% off that and holds the second-highest opening record out of the five. Universal spent $120 million in making the latest installment and released it in 4,026 theaters.

It will be interesting to see if the studio greenlight another Bourne film. That’s good news for Universal, which ran the risk of losing a Tiffany franchise without Damon’s involvement. Star Trek Beyond is in its second week, and the weekend totals should boost the newest entry in the franchise past the $100 million mark. Starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn as overworked mothers who overthrow the shackles of domesticity to go on a wild bender.

The comedy “Bad Moms” debuted in third place with $23.4 million. Open Road Films’ documentary Gleason earned $129,223 from nine theaters for a $14,358 per-screen average, while IFC’s The Land earned $12,040 from two theaters for a $6,020 per-screen average.

Senior box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations Jeff Bock says that the strong opening “just proved that Matt Damon is one of the handful of actors that can actually still open a film when you put his face on a poster”.

“Bad Moms” originally was set up at Paramount Pictures and was meant to star Leslie Mann with the actress’ husband and frequent collaborator Judd Apatow producing. The mildly received Nerve may be relying on low costs to buck up its bottom line (though its actual budget has not been officially unveiled), as the thriller debuted this week with an estimated $9 million, but has earned $15.1 million so far due to a Wednesday release date. Indeed, it might have done even better if it didn’t have to compete for women’s attention against a non-sequel comedy, “Bad Moms”.

Last week’s “Ice Age” sequel (which finished its second week in sixth place) seems to have had no effect on the ongoing success of ‘The Secret Life of Pets’. “Maybe with “Suicide Squad” opening, we’ll see the end to all this volatility”.
