“To take a 12-year-old kid from nothing and turn him into the best golfer in the world is a pretty nice achievement”.

Day becomes the third Australian to reach world No. 1, following Greg Norman and Adam Scott.

“To be honest, I had awful sleep over the last few nights, ” Day said, “thinking about winning this tournament, knowing I had to win this tournament to get to No. 1 in the world”.

The way Day dominated the BMW Championship often made it look as though he was playing a completely different game than the rest of the field. Since then, Day has been on an absolute tear. “But we cant deny what Jordan has done in the in the major championship this year. Still, with only 29 other players to beat, Day will be the overwhelming favorite.

Day said it was at St Andrews when he left a birdie putt short on the 72nd hole to narrowly miss out on a playoff berth that changed his mentality. If he manages a win in Atlanta, it could make the race for Player of the Year – an award Spieth appeared to lock up by winning the Masters and U.S. Open earlier in the summer – closer than anyone anticipated.

Scott Piercy finished third (70), seven strokes back. It is Berger’s second runner up finish of the season, but he entered the playoffs struggling. It’s his first top-five finish since taking Wells Fargo Championship in May.

McIlroy will have one last chance to put his name atop the PGA conversation at next week’s Tour Championship.

Kiwi Danny Lee will also be at the Tour Championship, sitting in 19th on the FedEx Cup list.

His insomnia did not stem from trying to win the tournament, he had won three in his last five starts, or maintain his place atop the lucrative FedEx Cup standings.

McIlroy (70), who falls to No. 2, finished 14 under with Rickie Fowler (69) and J.B. Holmes (68). I was like, I haven’t been in the top 10 since June.

“He’s a top-four D and he’s going to be a top-two D at some point”, Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli said via the team’s website. He had committed to play in the season-opening Frys.com Open on October. He moves from 34th to 27th and guarantees himself one more week this season.
